Do More With Less: Performance Management in 6 Easy Steps

One of the most effective, and constructive, ways to respond to budget and resource constraints is to implement a "performance management culture" in which existing staff are positively managed to improved performance and greater productivity. Many of the most respected private companies, such as Disney and Southwest Airlines, are recognized for their performance management cultures. Some government agencies have also adopted performance management concepts and have experienced significant improvements in performance and productivity.

These 6 easy-to-implement steps allowed one agency to triple production, improve response times, reduce errors and dramatically improve customer satisfaction while also reducing total staff. Learn how you can introduce performance management at your government for no cost.

Speaker: Dr. David Childs, Ph.D.

Dr. David Childs, Ph.D. was the Dallas County, Texas Tax Assessor-Collector for 20 years. During his administration, the Dallas County Tax Office (DCTO) tripled production, in faster response times, while reducing total staff. The DCTO maintained an average gross budget growth rate of 3.3% while comparable agencies had average budget growth rates of 10-12%. The DCTO earned 5 State-level and 4 National awards for excellence and, in 2007 and 2008, was the only government agency in Texas to be recognized by the State-level Malcolm Baldrige Performance Excellence program.

Dr. Childs teaches MBA courses in Systems Thinking and in Transformational Leadership. He is the author of Fit for Service.
